Erachi Pathiri (fried bread stuffed with Chicken masala) is a traditional North Kerala Malabar dish. It’s one of the popular iftar snacks in Kozhikode/Malabar area (Northern Kerala).

Authentic erachi pathiri is made with all purpose flour and is deep fried. You can use Mutton, Beef or Chicken for the spicy meat filling.

Ingredients

  • All purpose flour – 1 1/2 cup
  • Lukewarm water - 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Chicken - 250 gm
  • Onion – 2 nos (chopped)
  • Ginger Garlic paste – 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilies – 2 nos
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Pepper powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala – 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves – few (chopped)
  • Coriander leaves – few sprigs (chopped)
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp

Method

Step 1

Combine all purpose flour, salt, oil, lukewarm water and knead well to make a soft dough.

Step 2

Clean and wash the chicken pieces. Boil the chicken with turmeric powder and some salt. Once cooked drain the stock and shred or chop the chicken into small pieces.

Step 3

Heat oil in a pan and add ginger paste, garlic paste, green chilies, onion and sauté for 5 minutes.

Step 4

To this, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, pepper powder, garam masala and coriander powder.

Step 5

When the raw smell of the spices is gone, add the shredded chicken, salt and mix well. The filling is ready.

Step 6

By using the dough, make small sized balls (lemon sized). Roll this balls in the shape of chapatis.

Step 7

Place some filling at the centre of one pathiri and place another rolled out pathiri over it, gently press the edges together. Like this, make all the pathiris.

Step 8

Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the stuffed pathiris until it turns golden brown. Flip over and fry the other side too.

Step 9

Erachi Pathiri is ready. Serve hot Erachi Pathiri with a hot cup of tea. Enjoy!!!
