Banana Delight Recipe – Easy ഉന്നക്കായ Unnakkaya – Malabar snack

I remember Ramadan when I am writing about Unnakkaya which is a light healthy sweet dish very common in Malabar (south indian state Kerala) during Ramadan for Iftar. For kids who are fasting this is a healthy Iftar item because the main ingredient of the recipe is banana which is rich in sugar and fiber which is ideal for an immediate and prolonged source of energy.


  • Ripe banana - 3 nos (steamed and remove the black seeds inside)
  • For preparing the banana filling
  • Ghee or butter - 4 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts crushed - 1/4 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Cardamom powder - as per taste
  • Sugar - 1/4 cup
  • Pinch of salt
  • Vegetable oil - for frying


Step 1

Mash the steamed banana without any lump (If banana becomes very smooth refrigerate for some time or you can add little rice powder) and keep it aside. Consistency should be same as Chapatti / pizza dough.

Step 2

For preparing the filling: Heat ghee or butter in a pan and fry cashew nuts and then add the grated coconut.

Step 3

Sauté these until golden brown.

Step 4

Add cardamom powder and sugar along with a pinch of salt and sauté for a minute so that everything is mixed well.

Step 5

Switch of the flame and allow to cool.

Step 6

To Prepare Unnakaya: Grease hands with ghee and make lemon size ball with mashed banana.

Step 7

Flatten this in your hands and fill with Coconut filling. Close the banana with hands and make egg-like shape.

Step 8

Heat oil in a thick bottomed pan and fry the Unnakkaya by turning them constantly so that all sides are fried well . Once Unnakkaya turn to golden brown drain it to a tissue paper. Serve hot with hot black tea. Note - We can make 8 Unnakkaya with 3 bananas.
