Bread upma is a tasty and healthy food. The preparation time for this food item is very less and can be easily prepare at home. It can be used as a breakfast item, teatime snack or nalumani palaharam.

Upma is A.K.A “uppumaavu’ ( ഉപ്പുമാവ് recipe ) in malayalam language.

Upma is a healthy food item. It contains vitamins, proteins and minerals. It helps to regulate the blood pressure, reduce the risk of asthma in children, lowers bad cholesterol etc.

Ingredients

  • Bread slices - 5 nos
  • Onion - 1 nos ( chopped )
  • Tomato - 1 nos ( chopped )
  • Green chillies - 3 nos ( chopped )
  • Sambar powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 3 sprigs
  • Butter - 3 tsp for cooking
  • Coriander leaves - 1 small bunch ( chopped )
  • Salt to taste
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tsp
  • Water - 3 tsp
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp

Method

Step 1

Cut the bread slices into small squares. Heat a pan and add 1 tsp of butter then toast the bread pieces slightly for 2 minutes. Keep aside.

Step 2

Chop the onion, green chillies and tomato.

Step 3

Heat 2 tsp of oil and splutter mustard seeds. Then add chopped onions and green chillies. Saute on medium heat, until soft and tender.

Step 4

Add tomatoes, curry leaves, turmeric powder and sambar powder.

Step 5

Stir and cook the tomatoes until they turn lightly soft as well. Sprinkle some water.

Step 6

Add the fried bread pieces, salt and mix well. Then add ghee and cover with a lid. Cook for 3 minutes in a low flame. Finally sprinkle 1 tsp of lemon juice.

Step 7

Tasty Bread Upma is ready.

Step 8

Garnish with the coriander leaves. Serve hot with tomato ketchup.
