Chakka Varuthathu | Jackfruit Chips | ചക്ക വറുത്തത്

Chakka varuthathu is an authentic chips of Kerala. Jackfruit chips have the highest sodium content which is around 226 mg of sodium per 30 g serving. Chakka Chips is very tasty, crispy and healthy snack food, which can be stored in air-tight containers for a long time.

Chakka Varuthathu or Jackfruit Chips is a popular snack of Kerala served at the teatime. Jackfruit Chips are very tasty with its mild sweetness and crunchiness. Choose the half ripe flesh of the Jackfruit for fry and do not make at the ripen fruits as it drinks lots of oil and do not become crisp.

Jackfruit is a very common fruit in Kerala. So the Keralites likes to prepare variety of dishes using Jackfruit. Chakka Varuthathu or Jackfruit Chips are easy to prepare and very tasty snack.

Try this simple and tasty recipe for this Onam.

Ingredients

  • Raw Chakka - 2 cup (cleaned and cut into thin strips)
  • Water - 1/4 cup
  • Coconut oil - 3 cup (for deep frying)
  • Salt (as per taste)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Method

Step 1

Clean the Chakka Chula ( the edible yellow part of Jackfruit ) and remove the seeds. Slice the Chakka Chula into long narrow strips.

Step 2

Take a bowl and mix turmeric powder and salt in water and keep it aside.

Step 3

Heat coconut oil in a thick bottomed pan.

Step 4

Add sliced Chakka Chula in hot coconut oil and fry till it turns crispy.

Step 5

Reduce the flame and sprinkle mixture of turmeric powder and salt water over this and mix well.

Step 6

Remove it from the oil when the bubbles subsides.

Step 7

Spread it on paper tissue so that the tissue will absorb the extra oil.

Step 8

Tasty Chakka varuthathu is ready.
