Chana masala, also known as chole masala or channay masala is a popular Punjabi dish in Pakistan and Indian cuisine.

Chana masala tastes hot and spicy and goes well with rice, roti, poori or bhature. Try out this easy recipe!

Ingredients

  • Chana/vella kadala - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1 (chopped)
  • Ginger paste - 1/4 tsp
  • Garlic paste - 1/4 tsp
  • Green chilly - 3 nos (chopped)
  • Red Chilly powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1/4 tsp
  • Tomato - 1 no (chopped)
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut oil - 3 tsp
  • Cashewnut paste - 1 tsp

Method

Step 1

Soak chana/kadala in water overnight and clean with water.

Step 2

Pressure cook the chana with enough water and salt until 4 whistles.

Step 3

Grind onion to smooth paste and keep it aside. Heat a pan and saute onion paste in the oil until it turns brown.

Step 4

Add ginger garlic paste to it and cook till the raw smell disappears. Add chopped tomato, chopped green chilly and mix well. Add red chilly powder, turmeric and coriander powder.

Step 5

Dry roast cumin seeds and powder it. Add this to the above mixture and cook well. Add cooked channa into it and add some water.

Step 6

Boil well until channa absorbs the flavour and the gravy thickens. Add garam masala, salt and mix well.

Step 7

Garnish it with coriander leaves.

Step 8

Tasty channa masala is ready.
