Coconut Barfi Recipe 

Barfi is a sweet confection from the Indian subcontinent. Plain barfi is made from condensed milk, cooked with sugar until it solidifies. The many varieties of  barfi include besan barfi made with gram flour, kaaju barfi made with cashews, and pista barfi made with ground pistachios. The name is derived from the Persian word barf which means “snow”, since barfi is similar to ice or snow in appearance.

Though it originated in Persia, barfi was introduced to India and Pakistan during the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. The confection became very popular in South Asia, where it is now commonly served at festivals such as Holi and Diwali.

Coconut barfi is a delicious sweet that is made with freshly grated coconut and condensed milk. Coconut barfi is very popular home made Indian sweet which is easy to prepare. Barfi is often flavored with fruit such as mango or coconut or nuts such as cashew  and spices such as cardamom or rose water. They are typically cut into square, diamond or round shapes. Different types of barfi vary greatly in their color and texture.

Ingredients

  • Grated coconut - 2 cups
  • Milk powder - 3 tbsp
  • Condensed milk - 1/2 can
  • Sugar - 3 tbsp
  • Ghee - 3 tsp
  • Green food colour - a pinch
  • Sesame seeds - 3 tbsp
  • Cardamon powder - 1 tsp

Method

Step 1

Heat a pan add sesame seeds and fry for 3 minutes and crushed it.

Step 2

Heat a pan and add the grated coconut and fry for 5 minutes. Now slowly add in the condensed milk and mix well with the grated coconut.

Step 3

Then add the milk powder, sugar, crushed sesame seeds, cardamom powder and stir well. Add food color, ghee and mix well for 5 minutes.

Step 4

Grease a plate with little ghee or butter and spread the coconut mixture on it. Leave it to set for about an hour. Once it cools down and sets you can cut them into squares. You can also refrigerate the coconut burfi.

Step 5

The delicious coconut burfi is ready.
