Brown chickpea curry (Kadala in Malayalam language) is one of the favorite and traditional item in Kerala. One of the combination dish for Kadala curry is PUTTU (steamed rice powder recipe with
coconut layered).
More over recent studies have also shown that Chickpea can assist in lowering of cholesterol in the blood.
Ingredients
- Gravy items:
- Chickpeas soaked in water fortnightly - 250 grams
- Chopped onion - 1
- Chopped tomato (optional) - 1
- Green Chilli - 3
- Curry leaves - 10
- Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
- Red Chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tbsp
- Powdered fennel seed - 1/4 tbsp
- Ginger paste - 1/2 tbsp
- Garlic paste - 1/2 tbsp
- Water - 2 cup
- Salt to taste
- For seasoning:
- Coconut oil - 3 tbsp
- Mustard seeds - 3 pinch
- Shallots finely chopped - 4
- Red chilli dried - 1
- Curry leaves - 5
Method
Step 1
In a pressure cooker add all the gravy items together, mix well and cook.
Step 2
After 3 whistle of pressure cooker switch of the flame and keep the lid closed until pressure is fully gone (approx 10 to 15 minutes).
Step 3
Then open and check if the peas are cooked well or not. If u feel that chick peas have to be cooked more, add little more water if required and cook for some more time.
Step 4
Mean while for seasoning, heat oil in a pan. Splutter the mustard seeds, fry the onion and red Chilli. Add curry leaves and season the chick pea curry.
Step 5
You can serve this curry with PUTTU, chapathi, appam, other variety of breads and even boiled rice. The beauty is that you can cook and serve the curry in less than half an hour!!!
