Kallumakkaya Roast is a spicy dish, and very common in Northern Kerala (Malabar). It can be served as an appetizer or as a side dish with rice. Mussels or kadukka is a good source of zinc and folic acid. Kallumakkaya is a type of seafood with shell. It is one of the most common seafood. The taste and beauty of this dish is the way of preparation style.
Clean the Kallumakkaya properly and take the flush from shell. For taking, flush, first boil the kallumakaaya in water for 5 minutes. Once it is cooled it will open the shell, then you can easily take the flush using knife.
One of the nutritional benefits of eating mussels is increased protein intake. Proteins help maintain the function of every cell in your body. Eat mussels to increase your intake of vitamin A. Adequate vitamin A intake nourishes your eyes, skin and immune system, and aids in the production of new red blood cells. A 6-ounce serving of steamed mussels contains 30% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C. This particular vitamin promotes the strengthening of tissues, including ligaments and tendons.

Ingredients
- Kallumakkaya - 500 gm ( boiled and cleaned )
- Ginger - 1 inch piece ( chopped )
- Garlic - 1/2 tsp ( chopped )
- Green chilly - 3 nos
- Onion - 2 nos
- Tomato - 1 no
- Red chilly powder - 2 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
- Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves - a few
- Coconut oil - 3 tbsp
- Water - 100 ml
- Salt to taste
Method
Step 1
Wash and clean the mussels shells well and place them in pot with enough water and boil till the shells open.
Step 2
Drain all the water and scoop out the mussels from the shell ,clean the dirt and remove the black part in the bottom of the mussel well.
Step 3
Take a bowl and add 1 tsp of red chilly powder, 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala, 1/4 tsp of pepper powder, salt and make it into a paste. Marinate the Kallumakkaya with this paste and keep aside for 20 minutes.
Step 4
Heat coconut oil in a pan and fry the marinated Kallumakkaya for 5 minutes. Remove the fried Kallumakkaya from the oil and Keep this aside.
Step 5
Heat same coconut oil in a pan add the thinly sliced onions and sauté till it turns to translucent and light golden brown.
Step 6
Add chopped ginger, garlic, green chilly and sauté for few minutes.
Step 7
Now add the chopped tomato, salt curry leaves and sauté for a 5 minutes.
Step 8
Reduce the fire to medium and add 1 tsp red chilly powder, 1.4 tsp turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp of garam masala powder, 1/4 tsp of pepper powder and sauté till raw smell goes.
Step 9
Add fried Kallumakkaya and saute for 5 minutes on a low flame. Switch off the flame.
Step 10
Tasty Kallumakkaya Roast is ready.
