Kappa Chembin Thaal Curry Recipe

Kappa Chembin Thaal Curry is a delicious and nutritious side dish with rice. Kappa is cooked with Chembin Thaal and added coconut mixture.

Ingredients

  • Kappa / Tapioca - 1/2 Kg
  • Chembin Thaal ( Taro Stem ) - 300 gm
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Water - 250 ml
  • Grated coconut - 250 gm
  • Dry red chilly - 6 nos
  • Green chilly - 3 nos
  • Shallots - 5 nos
  • Garlic cloves - 3 nos
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curryleaves - 3 strings
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut oil – 3 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Cut the Chembin Thaal / Taro Stem ( ചേമ്പിൻ താൾ ) lengthwise and peel off the outer skin. Clean it well and chop the stem into small pieces. Add salt into it and squeeze out the thick serum and keep it aside.

Step 2

Peel the thick brown and thin pink skin from tapioca root. Cut it into small bite sized pieces. Wash it well.

Step 3

Heat a pressure cooker and add kappa, 200 ml of water and turmeric powder and cook for 10 minutes. Keep aside.

Step 4

Grind together grated coconut, green chilly, 4 dry red chilly, cumin seeds, garlic, 1 string of curry leaves and shallots coarsely.

Step 5

Mash the cooked tapioca with a spoon and add the ground mix and cook for 5 minutes on a low flame.

Step 6

Heat coconut oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds, 2 dry red chilly and fry curry leaves. Add this to the tapioca mixture and mix well. Switch off the flame.

Step 7

Tasty Kappa Chembin Thaal Curry is ready.
