Kerala Special Koottu Curry is a delicious vegetarian preparation with a unique flavour.ย Koottu Curry can be prepared with variety of vegetables cooked together. Here in this recipe I have used ย raw banana (ethakka), yam (chena) and black chickpeas (karutha kadala).ย Koottu curry is a must in ย Kerala sadya, grand feast prepared during special occassions in Kerala, South India.

Kerala Special Koottu Curry is very nutritous too as it is a mix of variety of vegetables and hence good for kids. This is one of the best vegetarian dish which can be given to kids as they will love to have variety of vegetables because of its sweet and spicy flavour.

Ingredients

  • Raw banana/ Ethakka - 50 gm (chopped)
  • Yam/ chena - 80 gm (chopped)
  • Black chickpeas/ chana/ karutha kadala - 60 gm
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Red chilly powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Black pepper powder - 2 tsp
  • Jaggery - 25 gm
  • Ghee - 25 gm
  • Grated coconut - 3 cup
  • Coconut oil - 200 ml
  • Cumin seed - 100 gm
  • Mustard seed - 25 gm
  • Curry leaves - 2 string
  • Water - 2 cup

Method

Step 1

Soak the black chickpeas/ chana/ kadala over night in plenty of water and pressure cook the next day with enough salt and 1 cup of water. Switch off the flame after 3 whistle.

Step 2

Grind 2 cups of grated coconut and 10 gm of cumin to make a smooth paste.

Step 3

Heat a pan add chopped raw banana, yam along with salt, red chilly powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, 1 cup of water, jaggery and curry leaves. Cook for 6 minutes.

Step 4

Now add cooked black chickpeas/ chana/ kadala and coconut paste to the raw banana and yam. Mix well. Cook for 3 minutes.

Step 5

For seasoning heat some oil in a pan and fry mustard seed.

Step 6

Now add 1 cup of grated coconut and fry for 3 minutes till the coconut turns light brown in colour.

Step 7

Finally add ghee, 15 gm of cumin and curry leaves.

Step 8

Add this coconut dry mixture to the vegetable mixture and mix well. The authentic Kerala style Koottu curry is ready to serve.
