Cherupayar curry (moong dal curry / green gram curry) and puttu is a common Kerala breakfast recipe. This is also a protein rich curry for dinner along with chapati also.

Talking about the nutrition content, as the curry is made of green gram (Cherupayar, เดšเต†เดฑเตเดชเดฏเตผย or moong dal) which is rich in proteins. This makes the dish good for those who are on low carbohydrate diet. Moreover, Cherupayar is rich in vitamin A, B, C and E and also contains minerals like iron, calcium and potassium.

It is generally considered as a weight loss food,ย as it is a low fat food, rich is protein and fibre. It also helps to reduce high cholesterol level and also keeps a check on your blood sugar level.

The most important part is the taste of the curry and easiness to make.

Ingredients

  • Moong dal (Green gram, Cherupayar, เดšเต†เดฑเตเดชเดฏเตผ) - 1/4 cup
  • Shallots - 6 to 7
  • Green chillies - 3 nos
  • Red chilly powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 4 pinch
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Thick Coconut milk - 1 cup (Made by grinding half coconut grated and one cup of water. Drain the mixture to get coconut milk)
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Soak moong dal (green gram or cherupayar) overnight and pressure cook the dal.

Step 2

Take some thick coconut milk. Thick coconut milk is made by grinding 1/2 coconut grated and 1 cup of water. Then drain the coconut to separate the milk.

Step 3

Heat a pan and add chopped shallots, red chilly powder, turmeric powder, salt, cumin Seeds, curry leaves, green chillies and saute till the shallots become translucent.

Step 4

Add moong dal to above shallots mixture and mix well. Add coconut milk to this.

Step 5

Mix well and allow to cook in low flame for 2 minutes.

Step 6

Before it starts to boil turn off the fire.

Step 7

Now your delicious cherupayar curry is ready to serve.
