Oats Upma recipe | Kerala Uppumaavu | ഉപ്പുമാവ് recipe

Oats Upma is a delicious food item. There are many varieties in upma as Semolina upma, rava upma etc.

There are different names for this recipe in many parts of India. It is called ‘uppumaavu’ in Malayalam language.

Upma is a healthy food item. It contains vitamins, proteins and minerals. It helps to regulate the blood pressure, reduce the risk of asthma in children, lowers bad cholesterol etc. 

The preparation needs very less time and it is very tasty. It can be used as a teatime snack or nalumani palaharam.

Oats Upma recipe | Kerala Uppumaavu | ഉപ്പുമാവ് recipe

Ingredients

  • Oats ( Quaker oats ) - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1nos ( chopped )
  • Carrot - 1 medium size ( chopped )
  • Beans - 4 nos (chopped)
  • Green chilly - 3nos ( chopped )
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece ( chopped )
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Urad dal - 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut oil - 3 tsp
  • Water - 1/2 cup
  • Cashew nuts - 5 nos
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - 4 leaves ( chopped )
  • Ghee - 1 tsp

Method

Step 1

Heat a pan and roast oats till oats gets hot. Keep aside.

Step 2

Clean and chop the carrots, beans and green chillies.

Step 3

Heat coconut oil in a pan then add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter add urad dal and fry until they turn into golden brown.

Step 4

Now add the curry leaves and chopped green chillies and fry for a minute. Then add chopped onions and fry until the onions starts transparent.

Step 5

Add chopped carrots, chopped ginger, chopped beans and cook in a medium flame for 4 minutes.

Step 6

Add the oats, salt and mix well for a minute. Add 1/4 cup of water then mix well and cover for 2 minutes in a low flame.

Step 7

Open the pan and sprinkle the remaining water then mix well. Cook for another 3 minutes.

Step 8

Add lemon juice to the Oats Upma and mix well.

Step 9

Add the chopped coriander leaves.

Step 10

Heat a pan then add ghee and fry the cashew nuts,

Step 11

Garnish with coriander leaves and fried cashew nuts.

Step 12

Tasty oats upma is ready.
