Peechinga Parippu Curry Recipe – Ridge Gourd Dal Curry
Peechinga Parippu Curry is a typical Kerala style tasty vegetarian curry which goes well with steamed par-boiled rice (Matta Rice).
Ridge Gourd is quite useful in Asthma, Skin Diseases and Splenic Enlargement. Researchers discovered that its regular consumption is helpful for Rheumatism, Backache, Internal Hemorrhage and Chest Pain. Ridge Gourd seeds may be used as a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic substance. Like cucumbers, ridge gourd has very high moisture content. It is also rich in dietary fiber, while extremely low in saturated fats.
Toor dal is also an excellent source of carbohydrates, which your body needs for energy. When you eat food containing carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into glucose or blood sugar. Blood sugar is then used to provide energy to your brain, body and nervous system.

Ingredients
- Ridge gourd ( Peechinga ) - 1 no
- Tuvara parippu - 200 gm
- Grated coconut - 100 gm
- Green chilly - 4 nos
- Shallots - 3 nos
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Curry leaves - a few
- Dry red chilly - 3 nos
- Water - 150 ml
- Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
Method
Step 1
Clean and wash tuvara parippu with water.
Step 2
Using a peeler, scrape off the thick skin of the ridge gourd. Clean ridge gourd well with water and cut it vertically through the middle. Now chop it into small pieces.
Step 3
Heat a pressure cooker and add tuvara parippu, chopped ridge gourd, chopped green chilly, 100 ml of water, turmeric powder and salt. Then pressure cook for 2 whistles. Keep it aside.
Step 4
Make coconut paste by grinding grated coconut, 50 ml of water and shallots.
Step 5
Once ridge gourd and dal are cooked well, add coconut paste to the gravy and mix well. Boil the mixture for 5 minutes. Check salt.
Step 6
Heat a pan and add 2 tbsp of coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds, dry red chilly and curry leaves.
Step 7
Add the seasoning on top of curry and mix well. Switch off the flame.
Step 8
Tasty and simple Peechinga Parippu Curry is ready.
