Sweet pongal is a traditional dessert in Tamilnadu, India. Pongal is a popular four day harvest festival in Tamilnadu. According to the belief of the people, it is the thanks giving occasion to the nature.

‘Sakkarai’ in Tamil means jaggery in English. This is a delicious dish and very easy to make at home with easily available ingredients. Pongal can be used as a teatime snack or nalumani palaharam. By serving this sweet dish can definitely surprise the guests, friends and other family members.

Ingredients

  • Raw rice - 1 cup (washed and drained)
  • Moong dal - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 4 & 1/2 cup
  • Grated jaggery - 1 & 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Ghee - 3 tbsp
  • Cahewnuts - 10 nos
  • Raisins - 5 nos
  • Salt - a pinch

Method

Step 1

Heat a pan. Then roast the moong dal with 1/2 tsp of ghee for 3 minutes.

Step 2

To a pressure cooker, add the rice and roasted moong dal with 4 cup of water for 4 whistles. Keep aside.

Step 3

Heat a pan and melt the jaggery with 1/4 cup of water. When it melts filter it with a strainer to remove impurities.

Step 4

Roast the cashew nuts in 1 tsp of ghee. When cashew nuts turns to golden brown colour, add raisins and switch off the flame. Keep it aside.

Step 5

Then mash the cooked rice and moong dal using a ladle.

Step 6

Heat another pan and mashed rice with moong dal .

Step 7

Keep the stove in a medium flame. Add Jaggery syrup to it and mix well.

Step 8

Add ghee little by little and stir for 5 minutes.

Step 9

Finally add roasted cashews and raisins. Switch off the flame.

Step 10

Tasty Sweet Pongal is ready. Serve hot.
