Matar Paneer Recipe / Paneer Green Peas Masala Recipe
Mattar Paneer is a vegetarian North Indian dish consisting of peas and paneer in a tomato based sauce, spiced with garam masala. It is often served with Rice, Poori or Roti depending on region. Matar is a Hindi name for peas and paneer is Indian cottage cheese and when they are cooked together in a creamy and rich curry sauce its called Matar Paneer. Green peas are one of the most nutritious leguminous vegetables rich in health benefiting phyto-nutrients, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Cottage cheese or paneer is a mild flavoured cheese curd dairy product that is prepared from loosely packed cow’s milk. It is prepared by allowing milk to curdle and then draining it almost completely.
- Paneer / Indian cottage cheese - 1 cup (250 gm ) ( cubed )
- Green Peas - 3/4 cup ( 200 gm )
- Tomatoes - 2 nos
- Green Chilly - 3 nos ( chopped )
- Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
- Red Chilly Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Coriander Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Garam Masala Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Onion - 2 nos ( sliced )
- Cinnamon - 1 inch
- Cardamom - 1 no
- Cloves - 1 no
- Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
- Black Pepper - 5 nos
- Lemon Juice - 1 tsp
- Vegetable Oil - 5 tbsp
- Curd - 1/4 cup
- Coriander Leaves - 2 stalks
- Water - 1 1/2 cup
- Salt to taste
Heat a non stick pan with 1 tbsp of oil and add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, cumin seeds and fry for 2 minutes on a low flame.
Add onion and tomatoes into it and fry for 5 minutes. Add the red chilly powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder to it and fry for 2 minutes on a low flame. Let it cool and grind it to a smooth paste.
Boil 1 cup of water in a pan and add peas for 3 minutes. Switch off the flame and drain the water. Keep it aside.
Heat 2 tsp of oil in a pan and shallow fry the paneer cubes.
Heat 2 tbsp of oil in another pan and add the chopped green chillies, ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute. Then add the ground paste into it and saute for 3 minutes.
Add the cooked green peas and curd to it and mix well.
Add the paneer cubes, garam masala powder and 1/2 cup of water into it and cook this for 6 minutes on a low flame.
Switch off the flame and add lemon juice and coriander leaves and mix well.
Tasty Matar Paneer is ready.
