Aana Pathal / Irachi Pidi is simply rice dumplings immersed in beef curry. The name may seem a little confusing, but yet the dish is simply delicious. We have to make the rice dumplings and the beef curry separately and finally will mix together. You need not to have extra curry or any other rotis. This dish itself satisfies as a gravy and accompaniments to it. You can also use chicken instead of beaf if you prefer.

Ingredients

  • Rice flour - 11/2 cups
  • Boiling water - 2 cups
  • Shallots - 8 nos
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Beef - 500 gm (cut into small pieces)
  • Onion - 2 (sliced)
  • Green chilly - 3 nos (choped)
  • Ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
  • Tomato - 1 (sliced)
  • Red chilly powder - 1 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut oil - 4 tbsp
  • Water - 1 cup

Method

Step 1

Grind shallots, grated coconut, fennel seeds together using a grinder or mixer.

Step 2

Add rice flour, grinded mixture, salt and mix it. Slowly add boiling water to it. Mix well with a ladle and make a thick and smooth dough.

Step 3

Grease your palm with some oil and shape the dough to small balls. Slightly press the center of the balls with your finger.

Step 4

Cook the rice balls in a steamer for 20 minutes. Transfer it to a plate and cool it. The rice pidi is ready.

Step 5

In a pressure cooker add coconut oil, sliced onion and saute well until onion turns transparent. Then add green chilly, ginger garlic paste and saute for 3 minutes.

Step 6

Add tomato, red chilly powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, garam masala and stir for 3 minutes.

Step 7

Add washed, drained beef and saute well. Then add 1 cup of water, salt and curry leaves. Close the lid and cook for 15 minutes.

Step 8

Open the cooker add the rice pidi and mix well. Cook in very low flame for 5 minutes. By this time, the gravy will be very thick coating all the pidis. Switch off the flame.

Step 9

Tasty Aana Pathal / Irachi Pidi is ready.
