Chemmeen Vada Recipe

Chemmeen Vada is a typical Kerala cuisine. It’s quick and easy appetizer which is spicy and delicious. It is prepared by grinding cooked prawns into a coarse ( rough texture ) paste and then shaped into the form of Vada.

Shrimps are an excellent source of low-fat and protein and are abundant in vitamin D and good source of vitamin B12. Shrimp is loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids which has anti-inflammatory properties. The nutrient density of this seafood is very high and it is loaded with a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Shrimps Vada can be served as starters or side dish.

Ingredients

  • Prawns / Chemmeen - 250 gm
  • Onion - 1 no ( chopped )
  • Green chilly - 3 nos ( chopped )
  • Red chilly powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1/4 tsp
  • Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Potato - 2 nos
  • Curry leaves - 1 string ( chopped )
  • Coriander leaves - 1 tsp ( chopped )
  • Bread crumbs - 1 cup ( 200 gm )
  • Egg - 1 no
  • Coconut oil - 2 cup
  • Water - 1/4 cup ( 100 ml )
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Remove Head, tail, legs, vein and shell. Clean prawns.

Step 2

Boil potato in water for 5 minutes and remove its skin. Smash it and keep aside.

Step 3

Heat a pan and add prawns, salt, turmeric powder, red chilly powder and 100 ml water. Cook for 5 minutes on a low flame.

Step 4

Grind the cooked prawn in mixer grinder and keep it aside.

Step 5

Take a pan and heat 3 tbsp of oil and add chopped onion, salt and cook till translucent (വഴറ്റുക) for 3 minutes.

Step 6

Add ginger garlic paste and chopped green chillies into it and cook for 3 minutes.

Step 7

Add pepper powder, red chilly powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder, curry leaves, coriander leaves, salt into it and saute (ഇളക്കുക) well.

Step 8

Add the grounded prawns and mashed potato into it and mix well. Remove the pan from heat and keep covered.

Step 9

Grease your palms with little coconut oil and make small balls with the prepared mixture and roll into desired shapes.

Step 10

Take a bowl and add eggs and beat well with a spoon. Sprinkle bread crumbs in a plate. Dip each cutlets in the egg and roll it with bread crumbs.

Step 11

Heat coconut oil in a pan and fry the cutlets till both the sides turn golden in colour. Transfer it to a paper towel.

Step 12

Crunchy Chemmeen Vada is ready.

Step 13

Serve hot with tomato ketchup.
