Chicken Puttu is something which is so easy to cook, delicious to eat and healthy too. Here I am using chicken masala for puttu. It is entirely up to your preference. I like Chiratta puttu and have made it in coconut shells.
Puttu is a specialty of Kerala and an authentic breakfast item. They are steamed cylinders of rice flour layered with coconut.There are many varieties of puttu. Now there is even chocolate puttu. You can have it for dinner or as an evening snack.
Chicken is a great source of lean and low fat protein. The health benefits of chicken include its good supply of protein content, the supply of essential vitamins and minerals, benefits in losing weight, cholesterol control, blood pressure control etc.

Ingredients
- For Puttu : - Puttu podi ( Roasted rice flour ) - 200 gm
- Grated coconut - 100 gm
- Salt to taste
- Water - 100 ml
- For chicken masala : -
- Chicken pieces - 300 gm
- Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
- Pepper powder - 1 tsp
- Water - 4 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Onion - 2 nos ( chopped )
- Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
- Kashmiri chilly powder - 1 tsp
- Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Garam masala - 1/4 tsp
- Green chilly - 4 nos ( chopped )
- Curry leaves - a few
- Coconut oil - 5 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Coconut shell - 1 halved
Method
Step 1
Take roasted rice flour in a bowl and add some salt. Slowly add water little by little over the rice flour and mix well. Continue this process till the flour becomes wet and smooth. Keep this aside for 10 minutes.
Step 2
Clean and cut the chicken into small pieces.
Step 3
Heat a pressure cooker and add chicken with salt and 1/2 tsp pepper powder. Cook this for 4 whistle. Once cooked, shred the chicken using a mixer.
Step 4
Heat coconut oil in a pan and add chopped onion, ginger garlic paste, green chillies and saute well on a low flame.
Step 5
Add turmeric powder, red chilly powder, 1/2 pepper powder, garam masala and coriander powder into it and mix well.
Step 6
Add the shredded chicken, curry leaves and salt into it. Mix well and cook for 3 minutes. Chicken masala is ready.
Step 7
Take an empty coconut shell, the part which has eyes, scrape off the inside remaining with a spoon, rinse in water. There are three eyes in the coconut, poke the flimsy eye with a spoon.
Step 8
Put the small steel plate with holes, inside the chiratta puttu maker mould. Add a tablespoon of grated coconut. Then add chicken masala and 4 tbsp of rice flour. Again layer with grated coconut, chicken masala and puttu powder.
Step 9
Heat water in a pressure cooker and when the steam starts coming out, place the coconut shell on the top of the nozzle of the pressure cooker and keep a napkin as a lid for the shell. Let it steam for 6 minutes on a medium flame.
Step 10
When steam comes from the top of the coconut shell, keep for 2 minutes. Switch off the flame. Remove it from the pressure cooker and keep it for 2 minutes in the mould itself and then remove.
Step 11
Tasty Chicken puttu is ready.
