Ellunda / Sesame Seed Balls

Sesame seed is one of the oldest oil seed crops. Sesame seeds are known as ‘ ellu ‘ in Malayalam. Sesame seeds mixed with heated jaggery is made into balls and bars similar to peanut brittle and eaten as snacks.

The Sesame seeds are especially high in copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium and dietary fiber. Sesame seeds also reduce bad cholesterol and balance good cholesterol. Sesame seed balls or ‘ ellunda ‘ can be used as a mid meal snack instead of biscuits and chips. Sesame seed balls are healthy and very tasty snacks for children.

Try this simple Kerala traditional sweet snack recipe.

Ingredients

  • Black sesame seeds - 250g
  • Jaggery -150g
  • Ghee - 2 tsp
  • Water - 1/4 cup

Method

Step 1

Wash sesame seeds and roast them with 1 tsp of ghee in a pan until they starts to burst.

Step 2

Heat a pan and melt jaggery along with a 1/4 cup of water. Strain all the impurities with a strainer.

Step 3

Add roasted sesame along with 1 tsp ghee to the melted jaggery and mixed it well.

Step 4

When it cools a little, make it into small balls.

Step 5

Tasty ellunda is ready.
