Karkkidaka Kanji / കര്‍ക്കിടക ഔഷധക്കഞ്ഞി is a medicinal porridge prepared in Kerala mainly in the malayalam month, karkkidakam (17th July and ends on 16th August). It has high medicinal value, as it is specially prepared with herbal ingredients. The medicinal value of the porridge depends on the variety of herbal ingredients added. You don’t have to put all the herbal ingredients, if it is not possible to get them all. You can also prepare the porridge with the available herbal plants.

Ingredients

  • Navara rice or par boiled rice (matta ari, മട്ട അരി) - 1 cup
  • Thazhuthama (തഴുതാമ, Boerhavia diffusa or Hog Weed) roots - 3 nos
  • Mukkutti (മുക്കുറ്റി, Biophytum sensitivum) - 3 nos
  • Cherukadaladi (ചെറുകടലാടി, Achyranthes aspera) - 3 nos
  • Valli uzhinja (വള്ളി ഉഴിഞ്ഞ, Cardiospermum halicacabum) - 3 nos
  • Nilampparanda (നിലംപരണ്ട, Curculigo orchioides) - 3 nos
  • Cherula (ചെറൂള, Amaranthaceae) - 3 nos
  • Thottavadi (തൊട്ടാവാടി, Mimosa pudica) - 3 nos

  • Jeerakam (ജീരകം, Cumin seeds) - 5 gm
  • Kurumulak (കുരുമുളക്, pepper) - 2 gm
  • Chukku (ചുക്ക്, Dry ginger) - 3 gm
  • Uluva (ഉലുവ, fenugreek) - 5 gm
  • Thick coconut milk - 1 cup
  • Water - 3 cups
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Wash the rice with water.

Step 2

Clean the medicinal plants well with water.

Step 3

Slightly grind the medicinal plants and squeeze out the juice from it.

Step 4

Heat a pressure cooker, add rice, jeerakam (ജീരകം, Cumin seeds), aashali (ആശാലി, Lepidium sativum), kurumulak (കുരുമുളക്, pepper), chukku (ചുക്ക്, dry ginger), uluva (ഉലുവ, fenugreek), juice of medicinal plants and water. Cook this for 10 minutes.

Step 5

After 10 minutes, add thick coconut milk, salt and mix well. Cook 3 minutes more. Switch off the flame.

Step 6

Tasty Karkkidaka Kanji is ready.
