Kaaya Varuthathu / Banana Chips

 

Kaya Varuthathu / Banana chips is a simple snack and special for the Onam Sadya. Sliced banana fried in coconut oil and sprinkle with salt is called kaaya varuthathu or upperi in Malayalam. Banana chips is a popular snack of  Kerala and children’s one of the favorite snack.

Ingredients

  • Raw bananas/nenthra kaya - 5 nos
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut oil - 3 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Water - 1 cup

Method

Step 1

Take a bowl and add little water with turmeric powder and mixed it well.

Step 2

Peel the out skin of bananas and immerse in the turmeric water for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes take the bananas from the turmeric water. Drain and dry the bananas using a paper towel.

Step 3

Add salt into half cup water with a pinch of turmeric powder. Mix it well and set aside. Slice the bananas into thin round pieces.

Step 4

Heat coconut oil in a deep pan add the sliced banana pieces. Using a spoon stir frequently.

Step 5

When the banana pieces bubble up to the surface add 2 tsp of salt water to the oil and continue frying until crisp.

Step 6

Take out the fried bananas pieces and place it on a tissue paper.

Step 7

Tasty banana chips is ready.
