Mattar Paneer is a vegetarian North Indian dish consisting of peas and paneer in a tomato based sauce, spiced with garam masala.ย It is often served with Rice,ย Poori or Roti depending on region.ย Matar is a Hindi name for peas and paneer is Indian cottage cheese and when they are cooked together in a creamyย and rich curry sauce its called Matar Paneer. Green peas are one of the most nutritious leguminous vegetables rich in health benefiting phyto-nutrients, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants.ย Cottage cheese or paneer is a mild flavoured cheese curd dairy product that is prepared from loosely packed cowโ€™s milk. It is prepared by allowing milk to curdle and then draining it almost completely.

Ingredients

  • Paneer / Indian cottage cheese - 1 cup (250 gm ) ( cubed )
  • Green Peas - 3/4 cup ( 200 gm )
  • Tomatoes - 2 nos
  • Green Chilly - 3 nos ( chopped )
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
  • Red Chilly Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Onion - 2 nos ( sliced )
  • Cinnamon - 1 inch
  • Cardamom - 1 no
  • Cloves - 1 no
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Black Pepper - 5 nos
  • Lemon Juice - 1 tsp
  • Vegetable Oil - 5 tbsp
  • Curd - 1/4 cup
  • Coriander Leaves - 2 stalks
  • Water - 1 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Heat a non stick pan with 1 tbsp of oil and add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, cumin seeds and fry for 2 minutes on a low flame.

Step 2

Add onion and tomatoes into it and fry for 5 minutes. Add the red chilly powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder to it and fry for 2 minutes on a low flame. Let it cool and grind it to a smooth paste.

Step 3

Boil 1 cup of water in a pan and add peas for 3 minutes. Switch off the flame and drain the water. Keep it aside.

Step 4

Heat 2 tsp of oil in a pan and shallow fry the paneer cubes.

Step 5

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in another pan and add the chopped green chillies, ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute. Then add the ground paste into it and saute for 3 minutes.

Step 6

Add the cooked green peas and curd to it and mix well.

Step 7

Add the paneer cubes, garam masala powder and 1/2 cup of water into it and cook this for 6 minutes on a low flame.

Step 8

Switch off the flame and add lemon juice and coriander leaves and mix well.

Step 9

Tasty Matar Paneer is ready.
