Muthira thoran recipe | Muthira mezhukkupuratti recipe

Muthira thoran is a traditional side dish in Kerala, India. Muthira mezhukkupuratti is a vegetarian dish which can be served with rice, chapati, dosa, etc.

Muthira is A.K.A Horse gram. Muthira is highly nutritious and contains vitamins and proteins.

It is used as a medicine in India to cure cough, difficulties in breathing, gastric problems and control joint pains. Ayurveda uses horse gram to treat a variety of conditions ranging from rheumatism to worm removal, treating Conjuctivitis and piles. It has phenols which helps in reducing weight. Taking horse gram powder  in a little bit of water regularly, helps in treating and controlling skin rashes and boils.

Ingredients

  • Horse gram (മുതിര ) soaked in water fortnightly - 200 grams
  • Chopped onion (Optional) - 1
  • Tomato chopped - 1
  • Curry leaves - 8
  • Fennel seed - 1/4 tbsp
  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tbsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Vegetable oil - 3 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Cook fortnightly soaked horse gram with 1 cup water and salt in a pressure cooker.

Step 2

Once horse gram is cooked, heat a thick bottomed wok and saute onion in hot oil.

Step 3

Once onion becomes translucent add tomatoes and saute tomatoes until they become pulpy. Then add curry leaves.

Step 4

To this mixture add fennel seeds, coriander powder, chilly powder and turmeric powder. Mix well and saute for another 5 minutes.

Step 5

Then add cooked horse grams to the mixture (gravy) and mix well. If you want to make the curry more watery add little water and adjust salt. Your tasty, nutritious horse gram curry is ready in less than 1/2 an hour. Serve hot to children with wheat chapati.
