Bitter gourd kichadi – Pavakka kichadi

Bitter gourd kichadi / Pavakka kichadi is one of the 14 dishes of Onam sadya. Bitter gourd kichadi / Pavakka kichadi is a traditional Kerala dish made using coconut and yogurt.ย Bitter gourd kichadi/Pavakka kichadi is so easy to make and tastes delicious.

Ingredients

  • Pavakka (Bitter gourd) - 200 gm
  • Green chilly - 4nos
  • Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Mustard seed - 25 gm
  • Curd - 50 ml
  • Coconut oil - 100 gm
  • Dry red chillies - 3 nos
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves - 2 string
  • Water - 2 tsp

Method

Step 1

Clean and cut the pavakka into small pieces.

Step 2

Heat 75 gm of oil in a pan and fry the pavakka and green chillies for 5 minutes.

Step 3

Grind the coconut and 10 gm of mustard seed in 2 tsp of water to a smooth paste.

Step 4

Add the coconut paste into the fried pavakka and greenchillies. Cook for 3 minutes.

Step 5

Then add curd and salt to the pavakka mixture and cook for 2 more minutes.

Step 6

For seasoning, heat coconut oil in a pan add dry red chilly, curry leaves and mustard seed. Pour this in to the curry. Mix well. Tasty Bitter gourd/pavakka kichadi is ready to serve!
