A sweet and sour chutney made with tamarind, jaggery and red chilly. Tamarind chutney (chammanthi) is easy to make and delicious.
Try it for Onam sadhya.
Ingredients
- Tamarind - 1 lemon sized
- Dry red chilly - 5 nos
- Shallots/Pearl onion - 6 nos
- Jaggery - 2 tsp
- Coconut oil - 2 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Water - 1 cup
Method
Step 1
Place tamarind in a bowl and add warm water. Rub with your hands to dissolve tamarind in water as much as possible. Strain into a small pan. Discard the residue. The tamarind paste is ready.
Step 2
In a blender add pearl onion, dry red chilly.
Step 3
Blend it for 2 minutes.
Step 4
Take a bowl and pour tamarind paste, jaggery, the blended pearl onion and red chilly mixture and stir well.
Step 5
Add salt and coconut oil and mix well.
Step 6
Adding coconut oil will give the chutney a good taste.
Step 7
Yummy tamarind chutney is ready to serve. Garnish with green chilly.
Step 8
Serve this chutney with rice.
