Vazhapindi thoran is a tasty and healthy dish and this recipe is made with green gram.

Banana stem with green gram ( ചെറുപയർ ) gives highly nutritional values to the body to maintain a good health. Its a spicy and tasty evening snack ( nalumani palaharam’ ) with a cup of hot tea.

 Vazha pindi consists of high in fiber, vitamins, potassium, etc and a kind of medicine to cure stomach pain.

This is a traditional Kerala side dish usually served with meals. It gives a cool feeling to the body.

Ingredients

  • Vazhapindi ( banana stem ) - 1 medium piece
  • Green gram - 1 cup
  • Shallots - 10 nos
  • Dry red chilly - 5 nos
  • Curry leaves - 2 strings
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Coconut oil - 4 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Clean the green gram with water. Cook the green gram with 1/2 cup of water and salt. Then keep it aside.

Step 2

Cut the vazhapindi into circular pieces, removing the fibrous stuffs that comes out as you cut. You can use your fingers for this purpose. Now chop the circular pieces and drop them into some water for few minutes.

Step 3

Then wash thoroughly and cook it with adding 1/2 cup of water and salt for 2 whistle. .

Step 4

Crush shallots and dry red chilly together.

Step 5

Heat coconut oil in a pan and add crushed shallots & dry red chilly,curry leaves and saute for 3 minutes.

Step 6

Then add cooked vazhapindi, cooked green gram to this and mix well. Cook this in a medium flame for 5 minutes.

Step 7

Tasty Vazhapindi thoran is ready.

Step 8

Serve hot with cooked rice.
