Watermelon May Prevent Heart Diseases
A watermelon slice everyday can shield you from heart diseases and weight gain, suggest the researchers from the Purdue University in US. Watermelon was found to be effective in preventing the build-up of harmful cholesterol. Moreover, the fruit helped control weight gain and resulted in fewer fatty deposits within blood vessels.
In the trials, two groups of mice were fed a high-fat diet; first group was given watermelon juice while the other group got water to drink. They tracked health of both the groups for several months. At the end of the experiment, the key finding was that the group that received watermelon juice regularly had 50 per cent less Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) than the other group despite eating the same diet. Moreover, they found that the first group of mice weight 30 per cent less than the other group.
Researchers believed that watermelon’s health-boosting properties lies in citrulline, a chemical compound present in the juice. Earlier, there were studies that have linked citrulline to heart disease prevention by lowering blood pressure.
