Jackfruit recipe
Jackfruit is a fruit largely available in Kerala. It is also called as chakka in Malayalam language. Chakka kuzacathu or Chakka Puzhukku is a traditional dish in Kerala. Unripe Jackfruit (പച്ച ചക്ക / പഴുക്കാത്ത ചക്ക) can be cooked as vegetable.
Chakka kuzacathu or Chakka Puzhukku is one way of preparing unripe jackfruit. Chakka Puzhukku is a mushy preparation with overcooked unripe chakka, mixed with ground coconut and spiced mixtures.

Ingredients

  • Chopped unripe jackfruit (പച്ച ചക്ക / പഴുക്കാത്ത ചക്ക) - 4 cup
  • Water - 1 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Cumin seeds -1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
  • Green chillies - 3 nos
  • Curry leaves - 2 stems
  • Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dried red chilly - 3 nos
  • Shallots - 3 nos
  • Garlic - 3 nos

Method

Step 1

Cut the jackfruit into 2 equal half. Remove the jackfruit bulbs and clean them by removing its seeds.cut it into small pieces.

Step 2

Cook the chopped jackfruit with little water, salt and turmeric powder.

Step 3

Grind the grated coconut with green chillies, garlic, cumin seeds, small onion and turmeric powder to a coarse mixture without adding water and keep aside.

Step 4

Add the coarsely ground coconut mixture to the cooked jackfruit/chakka.Mix everything well.Add salt as required and cook in a medium heat for a minute or two, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

In a pan, heat coconut oil, splutter mustard seeds,dried red chillies and saute few curry leaves for few seconds.

Step 6

Pour it over the cooked jackfruit coconut mixture.

Step 7

Tasty Chakka kuzacthu is ready.

Step 8

Serve hot with kanji or with fish curry.
