Chemmeen Ularthiyathu Recipe / ചെമ്മീൻ ഉലർത്തിയത് is a traditional Kerala prawns roast recipe. If somebody asks me which is my favorite seafood, I will say prawns without any doubt. The sight itself makes everyone’s mouthwatering.

Some important facts that we have to keep in mind while preparing prawns (Chemmeen, ചെമ്മീൻ) dishes are try to buy fresh prawns and devein and clean it properly before cooking. Prawns are good source of proteins and it is said that 100 grams of prawns contains approximately about 25 grams of protein as similar to the amount present in chicken or beef.

Ingredients

  • Prawns - 1/2 kg
  • Ginger - 1 small piece (finely chopped)
  • Garlic - 4 cloves (finely chopped)
  • Kashmiri red chilly powder - 1 small tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 small tsp
  • Pepper powder - 1 pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Onions - 2 nos (finely chopped)
  • Coconut slices - 1/2 cup
  • Tamarind - 1 small piece
  • Coconut oil - 3 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Onion - 1/4 cup
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Mix well red chilly powder, coriander powder, pepper powder, turmeric powder, finely chopped onions, finely chopped ginger, garlic, tamarind, curry leaves, prawns, salt and coconut slices in a bowl.

Step 2

Heat a pan and add the prawns mix and 2 cups of water. Close the pan with a lid and cook for 10 minutes in a low flame.

Step 3

The prawns must be well coated with the masala. Switch off the flame.

Step 4

Heat coconut oil in another pan and add mustard seeds. When it splutter, add the sliced onions and saute till it becomes golden brown in color.

Step 5

Add curry leaves and the cooked prawns. Saute well until the prawns are also get roasted. Switch off the flame.

Step 6

Tasty Chemmeen Ularthiyathu is ready.
