Dried prawn are prawns that have been sun dried and shrunk to a thumbnail size. Dried prawn is very low in fat but it is high in calories than fresh prawn because of its low water content. One ounce of dried prawn contains approximately 72 calories.

Dried prawn chutney ( Unakka Chemmeen Chammanthi ) is an all time favourite dish of Keralities. This Chammenthi is a very tasty dish and easy to prepare.

You can have Unakka Chemmeen Chammanthi with boiled rice.

Ingredients

  • Dry prawn - 1/2 cup
  • Grated coconut - 1 cup
  • Shallots - 5 nos
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Curry leaves - 2 string
  • Coconut oil - 3 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Dry red chilly - 5 nos

Method

Step 1

Soak the dried prawns in water for 5 minutes and wash it well and keep aside. Heat a pan and dry roast the prawns for 5 minutes.

Step 2

Heat oil in a pan and add dry red chillies and shallots. Fry it for 3 minutes.

Step 3

Now add grated coconut. Stir for 2 minutes to remove the water content from the grated coconut.

Step 4

Blend these items along with ginger, curry leaves and salt for 3 minutes. Dried prawn chammenthi is ready.
