Ethapazham Halwa / Ripe Plantain Halwa / Banana Halwa / Homemade Sweet Recipe / ഏത്തപ്പഴം ഹല്വ is a tasty and simple sweet recipe which is very popular in Kerala.
Creamy, rich and sweet bananas are nature’s own energy-rich food readily available throughout the year. Bananas are officially recognized by the FDA as being able to lower blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke. Rich in pectin, bananas aid digestion and it is the only raw fruit that can be consumed to get relief from Stomach Ulcers.
Eating bananas will help to prevent Kidney Cancer and builds strong bones by increasing calcium absorption. Bananas are high in antioxidants, eating a banana between meals helps to stabilize blood sugar and also it can lower the body temperature. Bananas help to overcome depression due to high levels of tryptophan, a natural mood-enhancer.
Banana is a good source of potassium, dietary fiber and vitamins B6 & C. The fruit holds a good amount of soluble dietary fiber that helps normal bowel movements, thereby reduce constipation problems. It also provide adequate level of minerals like copper, magnesium, and manganese. Magnesium is essential for bone strengthening and has a cardiac-protective role as well. Copper is required in the production of red blood cells.
Recent studies revealed the healing potential of BanLec, a lectin protein in bananas. Researchers found that this protein which binds to sugars can also bind to HIV-infected cells, enveloping them and preventing their replication and transmission. Also it was suggested that consuming bananas in the initial years of life can reduce the risk of developing Childhood Leukemia.

Ingredients
- Ethapazham / Ripe Plantain / Banana - 5 nos
- Jaggery - 1 cup
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Ghee - 1/2 cup
- Cardamom Powder - 1 tsp
- Cashew Nuts - 5 nos
- Water - 1/2 cup
Method
Step 1
Chop ethapazham / ripe plantain into small pieces.
Step 2
Heat a pan and melt the jaggery in 1/2 cup of water and strain it to remove any impurities.
Step 3
Heat 3 tsp of ghee in a heavy bottom pan and fry the cashew nuts till it turns golden brown. Remove it and keep aside.
Step 4
In the same pan, add the chopped banana and saute for 5 minutes. It will change from yellow to golden brown.
Step 5
Add the melted jaggery into it and cook till it is mashed up and gets reduced.
Step 6
At this stage add sugar and stir continuously for another 10 minutes. Keep on adding the ghee in between, to prevent it from sticking.
Step 7
Add cardamon powder, roasted cashew nuts and mix well and cook for 5 minutes. Stir continuously till it thickens. The halwa is ready when it leaves the edge of the pan.
Step 8
Switch off the flame and transfer it into a greased pan.
Step 9
Let it cool down and cut them into pieces.
Step 10
Tasty Ethapazham Halwa is ready.
