Kadachakka Varutharacha Curry or Breadfruit curry is a tasty Kerala dish prepared with fresh breadfruit and flavoured with delicious roasted coconut masala. Varutharacha masala curry made with kadachakka tastes like a meat curry and goes so well with rice.
Kadachakka or Breadfruit popularly known as Sheema Chakka has roughly 25% carbohydrates and 70% water with an average amount of vitamin C (20 mg/100 g) and small amounts of minerals like potassium, zinc etc. It helps in reducing cholesterol and acts as a bulk laxative.

Ingredients
- Kadachakka / Bread fruit - 1/2 kg
- Grated coconut - 3/4 cup ( 150 gm )
- Shallots - 10 nos
- Kashmiri red chilly powder - 1 tbsp
- Coriander powder - 1/2 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Green chilly - 3 nos ( silted )
- Ginger - 1 small piece
- Gambooge ( Kudampuli ) - 1 piece
- Curry leaves - 2 strings
- Water - 1 1/2 cup ( 250 ml )
- Coconut oil - 5 tbsp
- Salt to taste
Method
Step 1
Peel and cut the breadfruit into small cubes and clean it well.
Step 2
Heat 3 tbsp of coconut oil in a pan and roast the grated coconut until they turn into golden brown.
Step 3
Lower the flame and add red chilly powder, coriander powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder into it and fry for another one minute. Switch off the flame. When the mixture cools down, grind it into a fine paste by adding 1/2 cup of water and keep it aside.
Step 4
Heat oil in a manchatti / non stick pan and add the cleaned breadfruit pieces along with 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder, 1 cup of water, green chilly, 5 chopped shallots, gambooge, ginger and salt. Cook this for 10 minutes on a low flame.
Step 5
Add the coconut paste into cooked kadachakka / breadfruit and adjust salt to taste. Cook till the gravy thickens. Switch off the flame.
Step 6
Heat a pan and add 2 tbsp of coconut oil, 5 chopped shallots and curry leaves. Fry till the shallots are light brown in colour. Pour this seasoning on top of the kadachakka curry and mix well.
Step 7
Tasty Kadachakka Varutharacha Curry is ready.
