Karimeen Pollichathu in banana leaf recipe – Pearl spot fish pollichathu is a famous dish of Kerala. This star food of Kerala mainly involves broiling Karimeen fish marinated with a rich blend of spices. Then wrapped inside  banana leaves. The end result is a dish so deliciously soft and tasty. That it flow out its spicy juices when opened up. This delicacy enriches the taste buds of every sea-food lover.

Karimeen is a highly nutritive food. It contains low fat, high protein, rich in omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin D as well as minerals like Calcium and Phosphorus. Regular consumption of fish is heart-healthy as it helps lower blood pressure.

  • Karimeen (pearl spot fish) : 2
  • Ginger garlic paste : 2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds : 1 pinch
  • Tomato : 1 big
  • Onion : 1 big
  • Green chili : 3 nos
  • Kashmiri Chili powder : 2 table spoon
  • Turmeric powder : 2 teaspoon
  • Pepper powder : 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt : as needed
  • Lime juice : 1/2 table spoon
  • Curry leaves : 6
  • Coconut oil : 2 tablespoon


Step 1

Step1 Clean and wash the karimeen and marinate the fish with kashmiri Chili powder, turmeric, salt, ginger garlic paste, pepper powder and lime juice. Store the marinated fish in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Step 2 Heat a pan and add coconut oil. Add one finely chopped onion and saute the onion until the color fades. Add ginger garlic paste and one finely chopped tomato and saute it well. Put kashmiri Chili powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder, cumin seeds, chopped green chilies and salt to it. Saute it and add some water to it for cook well. Add curry leaves to it.

Step 3 Heat a pan and add some coconut oil to it. Fry the fish on both the side for 2 to 3 minutes and keep aside.

Step 4

Step 4 Take a banana leaf and pour the masala to the leaf and put one fried fish. Top it with the masala and then wrap and tie it as a packet. Then heat a tawa with 1 teaspoon coconut oil over a medium flame and cook the fish packet for 10 minutes. Take out on a plate and open the packet. The delicious karimeen pollichathu is ready to eat. Serve the dish with onions and lime juice.
