Kerala Fish Curry – Kottayam Style receipe | Meen Curry – മീൻ കറി

Kerala Fish Curry ( Kottayam Style ) or Meen Curry ( മീൻ കറി  )  is a spicy curry. It is a good combination with rice and tapioca ( kappa ). Fish curry is a signature item among any other curry in India, especially Kerala.

Having fish dishes is good for bones, keeps the body healthy & strong. It contains lots of vitamins, minerals, calcium and other health benefits.

Fish curry is a tasty curry with rice, chapati, paratha or parotta ( പോറോട്ട ).

Kerala Fish Curry ( Kottayam Style ) recipe | Meen Curry ( മീൻ കറി )

Ingredients

  • Fish ( any fish ) - 5 medium pieces
  • Kudampuli ( കുടംപുളി ) / Gambooge - 2 pieces
  • Garlic - 6 clove(sliced)
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece ( sliced )
  • Green chilies - 3 nos slited
  • Kashmiri chilly powder - 1 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 2 stalks
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds ( ഉലുവ ) - 1/2 tsp
  • Shallots ( small onions) - 5 nos ( sliced )
  • Coconut oil - 4 tsp
  • Water - 2 cup

Method

Step 1

Clean the fish with water and cut them into medium pieces.

Step 2

Soak Kudampuli in a cup of water and set aside.

Step 3

Take the earthern Pot (meenchatti), heat coconut oil and add mustard seeds. When they splutter add fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, small onions, sliced ginger and garlic and saute for 3 minutes.

Step 4

Add kashmiri chilly powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and fry it for 2 minutes.

Step 5

Add the soaked kudampuli along with water and combine well. Add fish pieces and salt to this.

Step 6

Cover and cook for around 15 minutes on law flame and bring it to a boil. Do not stir the fish pieces with a spatula (ചട്ടുകം ) this might cause it to break. So the best way is to rotate the pan so that the fishes get coated in the masala with out breaking.

Step 7

After 15 minutes cook uncovered for some more time till the fish gets cooked.

Step 8

Tasty Red Fish Curry ( Kottayam ) is ready. Serve hot with rice.
