Traditionally Mutton Vindaloo is a spicy hot dish made with coconut, vinegar and lots of hot red chilli peppers. Chili pepper was introduced by Portuguese traders during 16th century and with this came the development of Vindaloo dishes in Goa.

Do try this hot and spicy Mutton Vindaloo!

Ingredients

  • Mutton - 500gm
  • Whole kashmiri chilly - 8 nos
  • Ginger - 2 piece
  • Garlic - 5 pods
  • Onion - 1 (chopped)
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Cinnamon - 1 piece
  • Clove - 2 nos
  • Coconut vinegar - 1/4 cup
  • Sugar - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Thick coconut milk- 1/4 cup
  • Coconut oil - 5 tbsp
  • Water - 1 cup

Method

Step 1

Cut and clean the mutton in water.

Step 2

Soak whole kashmiri chilly into vinegar and coconut milk for half an hour.

Step 3

Make a fine paste of this along with ginger, garlic, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, clove and cinnamon. Combine pepper powder, turmeric powder, salt and sugar. The paste is ready.

Step 4

Pour this paste over the mutton and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for about four hours.

Step 5

Heat coconut oil in a pan and add the marinated mutton and stir for about five minutes.

Step 6

Add chopped onion and mix well for another two to three minutes till the onion becomes golden brown.

Step 7

Add one cup of water into it. Cover and cook in low flame till the mutton is soft and tender .

Step 8

Tasty Mutton Vindaloo is ready. Serve this with Rice, Naan or Chapati.
