Spring Onion Thoran Recipe / Ulli Thandu Thoran / ഉള്ളി പൂവ് തോരന്‍ is a delicious and easy thoran recipe. Thoran or Upperi refers to stir-fry, seasoned with coconut, curry leaves and mustard seeds is a usual preparation in the lunch menu of Kerala. Tryout this healthy and simple dish at your home.

Spring onions are a very good source of vitamin C, chromium and dietary fiber. They are also a good source of manganese, vitamin B6, folate, potassium, phosphorous and copper. Spring onion is normally used in cuisines as it enhances the taste of a dish. It provides a unique taste and flavour.

Ingredients

  • Spring Onion - 1 bundle
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Grated Coconut - 1 cup
  • Green Chilly - 2 nos
  • Dry Red Chilly - 4 nos
  • Cumin Seeds - a pinch
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
  • Coconut Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Water - 3 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Wash ullithandu ( spring onion ) in fresh water. Chop off the flower on top and a bit of stem at the other end. Chop spring onion.

Step 2

Grind grated coconut, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, red chilly and green chilly.

Step 3

Heat the coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and curry leaves. Now add the ullithandu, ground coconut mix and salt into it and sprinkle 3 tbsp of water. Give a good mix and cover it with a lid. Cook on low flame for about 10 minutes.

Step 4

Open the lid in every 3 minutes and give it a stir. Cook till the stems are cooked soft. Switch off the flame.

Step 5

Delicious Spring Onion Thoran is ready.
