Swiss Roll or cream roll is a type of sponge cake roll. A thin cake layer is made of flour, egg, sugar and baked in a very shallow rectangular baking tray, called a sheet pan. The cake is then removed from the pan and spread with jam or butter cream, rolled up, and served in round cross-sectional slices.

In India Swiss rolls are called “jam rolls”. A Swiss roll is perfect for any occasion like Birthday, Christmas or Parties. Swiss roll is a traditional, old fashioned tea time treat that is also served as a dessert.

Swiss Roll is basically a sponge cake filled with a delicate layer of jam or any creamy filling like chocolate or strawberry butter cream or whipped cream. You can use any filling of your choice, even Nutella.

  • Plain flour - 80 gm
  • Egg yolk - 4 nos
  • Egg white - 4 nos
  • Milk - 40 ml
  • Vegetable oil - 40 ml
  • Baking powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Icing sugar - 120 gm
  • Salt - a pinch
  • Whipped cream - 1/2 cup
  • Nutella Chocolate Cream - 5 tsp


Step 1

Preheat oven to 175 degree Celsius. Grease and line a swiss roll pan.

Step 2

Mix 4 egg yolks, 40 ml milk, 40 ml vegetable oil, 80 gm plain flour, 40 gm icing sugar, 1/2 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt in a large mixing bowl until it's smooth.

Step 3

Whip egg whites and gradually add sugar until it is very stiff.

Step 4

Fold 1/3 of the egg white into the mixture and mix well. Gently fold in the rest of the egg white mixture. The mixture is ready.

Step 5

Pour this mixture into prepared pan and smooth it out evenly.

Step 6

Bake this in the oven for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes take it out from the oven.

Step 7

To arrange swiss roll, spread nutella chocolate cream followed by whipped cream. Then roll it gently to form a swiss roll. Cut into pieces with a knife.

Step 8

The tasty swiss roll is ready to be served. Enjoy!!!
