Easy Unniyappam

Unniyappam – Unni Appam – Easy Kerala Style Unniyappam Recipe

Unniyappam – Unni Appam – Easy Kerala Style Unniyappam Recipe is a traditional sweet snack of Kerala. This is a small round-shaped soft snack. Unniyappam is also served with sadya in some places. It is made with rice, jaggery and banana.

Ingredients

  • Raw rice : 2 cup
  • Jaggery : 1 cup
  • Banana : 2
  • Coconut bites : 4 tbsp
  • Ghee : 2 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Coconut oil : for frying
  • Water : 1 cup

Method

Step 1

Step-1 Soak the raw rice in water for about 3-4 hours, if your using rice flour then lightly roast the flour. In the meanwhile, melt jaggery with ¼ cup of hot water. Make a thick syrup out of it, Strain to take out any impurities and cool the syrup.

Step 2

Step-2 Drain the water from the rice and grind the rice by adding the jaggery syrup to a smooth paste along with chopped ripe banana into 3 or 4 pieces, and add them along with the seeds from the cardamom pods and grind everything together to a smooth nice batter.

Step 3

Step-3 Fry the coconut bits in 2 tsp of ghee till it becomes light brown in color. Add this roasted coconut bites to the batter and mix well . Keep the batter about ½ to 1 hour for thickening.

Step 4

Step-4 Place the unniyappa chatti ( a special pan for making unniyappam ) on the stove and pour 1 tablespoon coconut oil into each rounds. When the oil hot pour half ladleful of batter into each round. Cook both sides of unniyappam until a brown colour appears. Then remove them from the pan using a metal skewer . The tasty unniyappam is ready. Serve with a cup of coffee or tea.
