In India, Agar-Agar is known as China grass. It is also known as kanten and Japanese isinglass. These jellies are made with Agar- Agar which is nothing but vegetarian gelatin.

These are great for entertaining, especially with respect to kids who would love it for how it looks. You can make them into any shapes you desire using molds. Here, I have cut them into squares. This recipe is so simple and easy to make.

  • Agar-Agar flakes/powder - 4 tbsp
  • Milk - 4 cups
  • Pink food coloring - 2 drops
  • Rose essence - 1/2 tsp
  • Sugar - 1 1/2 cup


Step 1

Take a bowl add the agar-agar flakes into the milk and stir well.

Step 2

Bring the milk to a boil. Keep stirring to avoid the agar from sticking to the bottom. Once it comes to boil, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the agar has completely dissolved. Then add sugar and dissolve. Cool for 5 minutes.

Step 3

Cool and then add the essence and the pink coloring. Stir well.

Step 4

Pour this mixture into either molds or into a flat dish. Refrigerate about 2-3 hrs or until set.

Step 5

Before serving cut it into shapes of your liking.

Step 6

The delicious pink square jelly is ready to be served.
